Streaming service Deezer said on Tuesday that it is developing a new toggle allowing users to filter out AI-generated music uploaded to the platform. According to the company, enabling the toggle will prevent AI-generated tracks, albums and related artists from appearing in search results. Deezer expects to make the feature available before the end of the year.
Why the change?
Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said there was clear user demand for the ability to exclude AI-created music. "We’ve seen clear user demand for the ability to filter out AI-generated music, and we are now giving everyone the option to remove this content completely from their streaming experience on Deezer, and focus only on human creators and creations, if they wish," he said. Lanternier added that the rapid increase of AI music on the platform was one of the drivers behind the toggle feature.
How widespread is AI music on Deezer?
Deezer introduced AI-detection tools last year and has been reporting the numbers of AI uploads since then. At the time those tools were added, AI-generated tracks made up about 10% of daily uploads. By July, the company said, AI tracks accounted for more than 50% of daily uploads, with an average of roughly 90,000 AI tracks uploaded per day.
Other platforms’ approaches
Different streaming services have taken varied approaches to AI music: Bandcamp has implemented a full ban on AI tracks, Tidal has cut off monetization for people uploading AI music, and Spotify has focused on more prominent labeling of AI tracks and artists. Variety reported in August that Apple Music was considering labeling AI tracks by the end of the year. In addition to platform-led measures, independent tracking systems are increasingly used to identify AI-generated music across services.
What this means for users
Deezer’s upcoming toggle will give listeners a simple opt-out if they prefer to avoid AI-created content. The feature is part of broader industry responses to the growing presence of AI in music, reflecting differing policies across platforms about how to identify, label, restrict or remove AI-generated works.
