Design platform Figma used its first Config event in India to introduce Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor intended to capture and centralize a company’s design language. The announcements also included deeper integration with the open-source headless CMS Payload and additional AI and coding features designed to bridge design and implementation.
What is Figma Specs?
Figma Specs is a Markdown editor that lets teams define design language and brand rules in a simple document that can serve as a reference for both human teams and Figma agents during design work. Specs can exist as a standalone file in Figma or alongside content on the canvas.
Beyond plain text, the editor supports references to other Figma elements: users can link to canvas elements, embed FigJam diagrams, include code layers, and attach concrete designs.
Context management and agent alignment
Teams can bring design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines into the Specs document to create a centralized source of context for the design system. Figma says both its own agents and third-party agents can consult this centralized system to follow brand and design rules more consistently when generating content with AI.
Code layers move to public beta
Figma also expanded its code layers capability, which adds executable code to the canvas to enable more interactive prototypes. The feature was announced previously in private beta in June; at the India event the company moved code layers into public beta so more users can test it.
Users may ask the agent to convert a design into code or to modify a portion of code to iterate on a prototype.
AI agents and steering for predictability
Last week Figma made its on-canvas agent available to a wider set of users. Given the non-deterministic nature of AI, the company is providing tools intended to steer AI toward more predictable outcomes.
Loredana Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, told TechCrunch: “We see Figma as the place where software teams come to decide what they build and ship. And so for that, I think one of the key things to keep in mind about what AI has changed and what it made available is the ability to build. There are 17-times more lines of code being produced today than in the past. But when you’re looking at releases, only 1.3-times more releases. A lot of that code actually is not necessarily built to ship, but really built to discover what the product is. It’s built to design.”
Ecosystem and integrations
Figma said it is adding support for more than 20 new tools to its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam.
Last year Figma acquired the open-source headless CMS Payload. The company is now integrating Payload with Figma Make for generating dynamic websites and managing content directly. Figma stated that Payload’s downloads have increased sixfold over the past 12 months.
India presence and market notes
Figma opened its first office in India late last year, housing sales, partnership, go-to-market, and product support functions. The company said India is its largest market outside the United States and that the platform works with 40% of the top 100 Indian companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Why this matters
Figma’s new tools — notably Figma Specs and the Payload integration — aim to reduce friction between design and engineering and make AI-generated outputs adhere more closely to brand guidelines. The public beta of code layers and wider availability of agents should accelerate iteration and collaboration across teams.
