Nine years have passed since Google introduced Android (Go Edition), the lightweight variant of Android designed for lower-end, budget smartphones. Google has expanded the set of lightweight apps for these devices by launching Gemini Go, a simplified version of its AI application.
Gemini Go will be available on phones running Android (Go Edition) that have at least 2 GB of RAM. Google described Gemini Go as a streamlined variant of Gemini, intended to perform AI-related tasks even on modest hardware.
Deployment and minimum requirements
As noted by GSMArena, Android 13 (Go Edition) set 2 GB as the minimum requirement for devices running the Go build, so meeting the memory threshold should not be an issue for most eligible phones. Google said the rollout will be gradual, and it did not provide exact timing for when the feature will arrive in specific regions.
Features and differences from Assistant Go
Gemini Go replaces Google Assistant Go, which had been accessible through the Google Search app. Users can start a conversation with Gemini Go by long-pressing the Home button or the power button. The app supports common assistant tasks such as:
- placing calls;
- recommending restaurants;
- finding electric vehicle charging stations;
- setting alarms;
- creating calendar events;
- starting media playback.
The app also supports contextual conversations: users can upload documents, images and other content to provide context and obtain more accurate responses.
