Netflix intends to make its content recommendations more personalized and interactive by expanding use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), Elizabeth Stone, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, said at the Bloomberg Tech conference in San Francisco.
According to Stone, the initiative aims to help users navigate the platform’s growing and increasingly unwieldy catalog. Netflix hopes that improving its recommendation system will reduce the user frustration that can arise from an abundance of choices.
The company already employs generative AI and natural-language processing (NLP) to map what mood viewers might be in and what kind of content they may want to watch. Netflix is also testing a voice-based user interface that combines past viewing history and user preferences with other signals, such as trending titles, to deliver more accurate, individualized recommendations.
Stone emphasized that personalized recommendations have long been one of Netflix’s core strengths, and the company seeks to remain at the forefront in this area. The announcement mirrors a broader push among streaming services to leverage AI-driven personalization to improve user experience and reduce cognitive load from large catalogs.
Why this matters
- Generative AI and NLP can enable finer-grained, context-aware recommendations that better reflect a user’s current mood or intent.
- A voice-based interface could provide an alternative navigation method for users who want to find content more quickly or conveniently.
The statement marks a notable step in the service’s technological roadmap, though Netflix did not provide a detailed timeline for when these new features might roll out broadly.
