Why Superhuman acquired rather than built
TechCrunch learned that earlier this year Superhuman ran internal tests of a notetaker with selected users, but ultimately opted to acquire an existing product to integrate into its productivity suite centered on AI. Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra acknowledged that the testing process highlighted how difficult it is to build a high-quality notetaker.
Mehrotra said he was impressed by some of the technical subtleties the Fathom team had developed, though he did not specify which. He suggested that with a working notetaker Superhuman can surface meeting context in real time.
Market competition and strategic fit
The meeting-notetaker space is competitive: startups such as Granola, Read AI, and newcomer Wispr have raised millions to grow their products. Venture-backed notetakers, even with healthy customer bases or revenue run rates, face pressure to do more than basic transcription and note capture — a dynamic that influenced Superhuman’s decision.
Fathom CEO Richard White noted that Superhuman’s 40 million users present an opportunity for broad distribution. White said that operating Fathom as a standalone company would have required building many features that already exist within the Superhuman platform, so acquisition accelerates reach and product development.
How the notetaker complements Superhuman’s platform
Superhuman already offers an email client, a docs app, a calendar, a database solution, and a newly launched AI agent builder platform. Placing a meeting notetaker at the center of that stack enables automated drafting of emails, updating data entries, scheduling follow-ups, and allowing AI agents to start tasks and extract insights from meeting content.
