TikTok on Wednesday launched a new feature called “Must Eat,” a community-driven guide that aggregates restaurants gaining attention on the platform. The aim is to centralize food recommendations shared by users and make it easier to discover new dining options.
How it works
“Must Eat” draws on more than 40 million posts and comments to compile restaurant recommendations and curated lists. Users can browse by city and filter results by cuisine, price, rating, and location to compare options before they go.
Recommendations are organized into two main categories: “Everyday Eats,” which highlights casual favorites and neighborhood staples, and “Elevated Dining,” which features places suited for celebrations, special occasions, or a night out.
Bookings and availability
Select restaurants will support direct bookings on TikTok via an OpenTable integration. The feature is launching first in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Users can access “Must Eat” through the search bar, the Local feed, restaurant pages, and location links attached to videos that feature participating restaurants.
Why it matters
The move positions TikTok as a more direct competitor to platforms like Yelp and Google Maps, but it differentiates itself by leveraging user-shared recommendations and viral content rather than relying primarily on traditional search results, maps, and reviews.
By rolling out “Must Eat,” TikTok is expanding its role in local discovery and restaurant discovery, starting with the three launch cities.
