On May 14, 2026, Anthropic announced a four-year partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (Gates Foundation) committing $200 million in grant funding, Claude usage credits, and technical support. The programs funded under this commitment target global health, life sciences, education, and economic mobility, and will be implemented with partners in the United States and internationally.
The initiative is led by Anthropic’s Beneficial Deployments team, which provides Claude credits and engineering support to partners in the four priority areas. The team also develops AI-related public goods—such as public health datasets and evaluation benchmarks—and offers discounted access to Claude for nonprofits and educational institutions.
Global health and life sciences
The largest portion of the partnership focuses on improving health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries, where Anthropic notes that around 4.6 billion people lack access to essential health services. Anthropic and the Gates Foundation will support a mix of new and existing programs intended to accelerate development of vaccines and therapies and to help governments use health data for faster, better-informed decisions.
As part of healthcare intelligence work, Anthropic will build connectors (which grant Claude direct access to other platforms and tools), benchmarks, and evaluation frameworks so researchers, developers, and governments can better assess AI performance on healthcare tasks.
The partners will engage health ministries and implementation partners on using health-intelligence data for workforce deployment, supply-chain management, and outbreak detection. They will also examine how AI can assist frontline health workers and patients with diagnosis, treatment, and medical decision-making.
Anthropic will use Claude to advance research on high-burden and neglected diseases. Researchers already apply Claude to detect patterns in systematic reviews and large datasets and to screen potential drug and vaccine candidates. The partnership will extend these efforts to neglected diseases beginning with polio, human papillomavirus (HPV), and eclampsia/preeclampsia.
The partners aim to explore whether AI can speed and simplify computational screening of vaccine candidates—potentially shortening early-stage development timelines—before moving candidates into pre-clinical development. A related effort will use Claude to screen for new therapies for HPV and preeclampsia; Anthropic’s announcement notes that HPV causes roughly 350,000 deaths annually, about 90% of which occur in low- and middle-income countries.
Anthropic is also partnering with the Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM), a research group within the Gates Foundation, to improve forecasts that guide where and how treatments for diseases like malaria and tuberculosis are deployed. Integrating Claude with IDM’s models should make forecasts more accessible to practitioners and non-specialist researchers and help IDM develop more predictive transmission models.
Education
The partnership will co-develop tools to improve educational outcomes for K–12 students in the United States, sub-Saharan Africa, and India. This includes producing public goods—model benchmarks, datasets, and knowledge graphs—to ensure AI tools for math tutoring, college advising, and curriculum design are effective. Anthropic says the first of these public releases will be published later this year.
In the United States, Claude will power tools that provide evidence-based tutoring to K–12 students and career guidance for students transitioning to the workforce. In sub-Saharan Africa and India, the partners will develop AI-powered apps to support foundational literacy and numeracy programs. This work is being undertaken as part of the broader Global AI for Learning Alliance (GAILA) with the Gates Foundation and other partners.
Economic mobility
The partnership will also back programs aimed at improving economic mobility. One focus of the Gates Foundation is raising agricultural productivity to improve livelihoods for nearly two billion people who rely on smallholder farming. Anthropic will support these efforts by making agriculture-specific improvements to Claude, assembling datasets on local crops, and creating benchmarks to evaluate model performance in agricultural applications; these tools will be released as public goods.
In the United States, the partnership will cover three areas: developing portable records of individuals’ skills and certifications that move across schools and jobs; offering trustworthy career guidance for new entrants and those retraining; and creating tools that link training-program data to employment outcomes to measure which interventions improve job and wage outcomes.
