Anthropic and CodePath integrate Claude into the largest US collegiate CS program

Anthropic has partnered with CodePath to make Claude and Claude Code central to CodePath’s collegiate computer science curriculum, giving over 20,000 students at community colleges, state schools, and HBCUs access to frontier AI tools.

Anthropic and CodePath integrate Claude into the largest US collegiate CS program

On February 13, 2026, Anthropic announced a partnership with CodePath, the nation’s largest provider of collegiate computer science education, to align CodePath’s curriculum with changes in software development driven by artificial intelligence. Under the agreement, Claude and Claude Code will be central to CodePath’s courses and career programs, providing more than 20,000 students at community colleges, state schools, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with access to frontier AI tools as part of their education.

Who is affected and why it matters

More than 40% of CodePath students come from families with annual incomes under $50,000. CodePath aims to give those students industry-vetted courses and career-network access that have traditionally been more available to students at wealthier institutions. Anthropic and CodePath frame the partnership as a way to broaden access to advanced AI tools so they are not limited to well-resourced universities.

Curriculum integration and classroom pilots

CodePath is integrating Claude into its AI offerings, including Foundations of AI Engineering, Applications of AI Engineering, and the AI Open-Source Capstone, so students can learn to build with tools like Claude Code and contribute to real-world open-source projects.

In fall 2025, over 100 CodePath students piloted Claude Code to contribute to open-source projects such as GitLab, Puter, and Dokploy. Participants reported the experience was both valuable and challenging. Laney Hood, a CodePath student and computer science major at Texas Tech University, said: “Claude Code was instrumental in my learning process, especially since I came into the project with very little experience in the programming languages used in the repository [including TypeScript and Node.js].”

In January 2026, Howard University announced a redesigned Intro to Artificial Intelligence course developed in partnership with CodePath and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The course gives students experience with Claude-assisted software development and is intended to prepare students for the kinds of work now expected of entry-level engineering roles. It is the first time CodePath’s applied AI curriculum is being offered for academic credit at a university.

Michael Ellison, Co-founder and CEO of CodePath, said: “We now have the technology to teach in two years what used to take four. But speed for some and not others just widens inequality. Partnering with Anthropic means our students learn to build with Claude from day one, at institutions that have historically been overlooked. This results in better outcomes for our students and a fundamentally different answer to who gets to shape the AI economy.”

Research collaboration and broader commitments

Beyond classroom use, Anthropic and CodePath will collaborate on public research into how AI is reshaping coding education and the dynamics of economic opportunity. They plan to share findings from students, educators, and industry leaders about what works and what does not as AI changes how people acquire technical skills and enter the workforce.

The partnership builds on Anthropic’s broader efforts to put AI tools into the hands of educators and students. Anthropic is working with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to provide free AI training to its 1.8 million members across the United States. In Iceland, Anthropic launched one of the world’s first national AI education pilots with the Ministry of Education and Children, giving teachers nationwide access to Claude. In Rwanda, Anthropic is partnering with the government and ALX to deliver a Claude-powered learning companion to hundreds of thousands of students and young professionals across Africa. Anthropic also signed the White House’s “Pledge to America’s Youth: Investing in AI Education,” committing to expand AI education nationwide through investments in cybersecurity education, the Presidential AI Challenge, and a free AI curriculum for educators.

Anthropic and CodePath say the aim is to ensure the tools changing how software is built are available beyond the best-resourced institutions and accessible to a broader, more diverse group of students.
