Anthropic opens Bengaluru office and expands AI partnerships across India

On February 16, 2026, Anthropic officially opened a new office in Bengaluru and announced a set of partnerships spanning enterprise, education, agriculture and the public sector in India. The company said India is the second-largest market for Claude.ai and hosts a developer community doing some of the most technically demanding AI work they have seen.

Usage patterns and business growth

Anthropic reported that nearly half of Claude usage in India involves computer and mathematical tasks — building applications, modernizing systems, and shipping production software. The company also stated that its run-rate revenue in India has doubled since the expansion announced in October 2025.

The customer base in India is broad, from large enterprises to digital-native companies and startups. Examples highlighted in the announcement include:

  • Air India using Claude Code to help developers deliver custom software faster and at lower cost while rolling out agentic AI across operations.
  • CRED achieving twice as fast feature delivery and 10% better test coverage with Claude Code.
  • Cognizant deploying Claude to 350,000 employees globally to modernize legacy systems, accelerate software development, and support AI adoption among enterprise clients.
  • Startups such as Razorpay, Rocket, Enterpret and Emergent building on Claude; Emergent reached $25 million in annual recurring revenue and two million users in under five months, built entirely with Claude.

Building Indic language capabilities and evaluations

Anthropic noted that more than a billion people in India speak one of the officially recognized languages, while models still tend to perform better in English. Six months earlier, the company launched an effort to curate higher-quality, more representative training data in ten widely spoken Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu.

Now Anthropic is working with Karya and the Collective Intelligence Project to build evaluations that test model performance on locally relevant tasks across domains such as agriculture and law, in partnership with domain experts from nonprofits including Digital Green and Adalat AI. Anthropic said these evaluations will guide improvements to future models for Indic-language speakers and India-relevant use cases, and that it intends to make the evaluations publicly available.

Education and nonprofit collaborations

Educational and instructional tasks account for about 12% of Claude.ai use in India. Anthropic became the first strategic AI lab partner for Pratham, one of India’s largest education nonprofits. Pratham’s Anytime Testing Machine, powered by Claude, is currently being piloted with 1,500 students across 20 schools, with plans to expand to 100 schools by the end of 2026.

Earlier this year the system was adapted for more than 5,000 learners in Pratham’s Second Chance program, which supports women who dropped out of formal schooling. The Anytime Testing Machine aims to provide flexible, credible pathways for learning and certification by helping students practice for exams.

Anthropic is also collaborating with Central Square Foundation to apply EdTech and AI more effectively for children from underserved communities. As part of this collaboration, Anthropic will provide technical expertise, mentorship and API credits to organizations developing AI-enabled tools — including personalized tutors, teacher coaching solutions and assessment-driven instruction — with the aim of reaching more primary-school students across India.

Agriculture, public sector and legal access

India has built interoperable digital public infrastructure at scale; Anthropic is partnering with the EkStep Foundation to explore how AI can extend those efforts to population-scale impact. Agriculture is a focus area: it makes up nearly a sixth of the Indian economy and employs nearly half of the labor force. Through the OpenAgriNet effort, Anthropic is working toward Claude deployments that expand access to expert knowledge in agriculture.

The company is also demonstrating how Claude Code and Cowork can help nonprofits themselves, including Noora Health (which provides health coaching to millions of families) and Intelehealth (which connects patients in remote communities to quality medical care).

India has about 50 million pending court cases, and routine updates can take months to reach litigants. Anthropic is supporting Adalat AI to improve access to judicial services with a national WhatsApp helpline launching today. Using Claude, the helpline provides instant case updates as well as translation, document summarization and interactive querying of legal documents in native Indian languages.

Open standards and interoperability

Anthropic created the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a universal open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems and recently donated it to the Linux Foundation. The Indian Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), with support from the nonprofit Bharat Digital, launched the first official Indian government MCP server, enabling AI system users to access and query authoritative national statistics in an open and interoperable way.

In the private sector, Swiggy uses the MCP to allow people to order groceries and make dining reservations directly through Claude.

Bengaluru office and hiring

The new Bengaluru office is Anthropic’s second office in Asia after Tokyo. The India operation is led by Irina Ghose, Managing Director of India. The office will focus on hiring local talent across a wide range of roles; Anthropic directs interested candidates to its careers page for job information.

Summary

Anthropic is expanding its India footprint with a physical office in Bengaluru and multiple partnerships across sectors, emphasizing Indic language capability development, education pilots, agricultural deployments and open interoperability standards. The company presents India as a strategic market where Claude is already used across enterprise and social-impact use cases.
