On October 18, 2026, Anthropic announced the establishment of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund and committed an initial 5% of its shares to that fund, subject to shareholder approval.
Escalation tied to company valuation
The company said the fund’s structure allows the share allocation to increase as Anthropic’s value grows. Specifically, for every 50% increase in company valuation above a defined baseline, the board may add an additional 2 percentage points of Anthropic shares to the Fund.
Why the shares are being set aside
Anthropic explained that much of its mission‑relevant work already occurs within the company, including AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research, and discounted access to Claude for nonprofits and scientific institutions. These activities mix public benefit and commercial value, so they have traditionally been held inside the company. The new Fund is intended to provide greater flexibility and scale to pursue mission‑oriented activities in other forms — for example large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations.
Labor market impacts and prior commitments
The announcement highlighted potential labor market consequences of AI: while AI can create substantial economic value, it may also produce instability for many workers. Anthropic has previously committed $200 million to studying and addressing this issue, and the company said the pace of AI progress may require bolder approaches that the Fund could pursue.
Legal form and restrictions
Anthropic will create the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund as a wholly‑owned limited liability company (LLC), rather than as a 501(c)(3) or other charitable entity, to allow flexibility between different forms of giving. The company stated that none of the Anthropic equity held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political contributions in the United States or abroad.
How much is dedicated now
This move builds on earlier personal and employee commitments. When Anthropic was founded, its co‑founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings. The company also operates an employee equity donation match program that allows employees to pledge equity which Anthropic matches; about half of employees participate. Combined with today’s announcement, Anthropic says roughly 20% of its shares will now be dedicated to public benefit purposes, with the possibility of additional percentages if valuation milestones are reached.
Next steps
In the coming months Anthropic plans to publish more details about the Fund’s governance and the valuation milestones that could trigger additional allotments. The company also intends to produce a public benefit report outlining progress to date on its mission.
