Anthropic and ALX partner with Rwanda to deploy Claude-based tutor 'Chidi' across African education programs

Anthropic has announced a partnership with the Government of Rwanda and African tech training provider ALX to deploy Chidi — a learning companion built on Claude — to hundreds of thousands of learners across Africa. Rwanda’s Ministry of ICT & Innovation and Ministry of Education will integrate Chidi into the national education system, while ALX will make the tool available to students continent-wide through its training programs.

Scope and target users

The initiative enables university graduates and early-career professionals in multiple African countries to learn new skills such as data analytics and cloud computing using Chidi. In Rwanda, teachers will be able to use Chidi to plan lessons and support students.

The Rwandan government will fund AI training for up to 2,000 teachers and a cohort of civil servants to develop hands-on experience integrating Claude into classroom practice and day-to-day workflows. Graduates of the Rwanda pilot will receive one year of access to Claude tools, including Claude Pro for individuals and Claude Code for developer teams used in government contexts, and university educators will pilot Claude for Education.

Rwanda frames the program as part of its Vision 2050 strategy to build an AI-ready workforce, stimulate startup creation that addresses local challenges, and enable citizens to join global companies requiring advanced digital skills.

Paula Ingabire, Minister of ICT & Innovation in Rwanda, said the program aims to prepare the workforce for 21st-century opportunities and to ensure civil servants gain foundational skills to engage responsibly with emerging technologies. Elizabeth Kelly, Head of Beneficial Deployments at Anthropic, emphasized that Rwanda’s comprehensive approach — training teachers, involving policymakers and creating a dedicated working group — helps lay the groundwork for responsible AI deployment.

ALX’s continental rollout and early usage data

ALX will integrate Chidi across its technology training programs. As one of Africa’s largest technology training providers, ALX reaches over 200,000 students and young professionals; through this partnership, all of their students will access Claude via Chidi. The tool is positioned as a “Socratic mentor,” guiding learners with questions rather than simply giving answers to encourage independent problem solving and effective collaboration with AI.

Since Chidi was rolled out on November 4, learners have engaged in more than 1,100 conversations and nearly 4,000 learning sessions, with nine out of ten users reporting positive experiences. Early use cases include assistance with complex coding problems, explanations of data science concepts, and the development of problem-solving skills.

Fred Swaniker, Founder and CEO of ALX, described the initiative as co-creating the future of learning to unlock Africa’s potential, saying Chidi helps students build capabilities, confidence and career prospects.

Context within Anthropic’s global education efforts

Anthropic presents the Rwanda–ALX partnership as part of a broader strategy to deploy AI for public benefit through education partnerships worldwide. The company cites prior initiatives such as a national AI education pilot in Iceland with the Ministry of Education and Children, a rollout of Claude for Education at the London School of Economics, and expanded presence in India via an office in Bengaluru focused on supporting developers and startups.

Anthropic and its partners say they will study these deployments, share lessons with the wider community, and continue supporting educators and learners as they shape the role of AI in education and the workforce.
