Apple has announced a change to its prior practice: it will release certain security fixes independently of major iOS version rollouts. According to the company, some patches have already been made available to all users before the wide public debut of the planned iOS 26.6 release.

Apple told Reuters on Monday that the move responds to threats amplified by artificial intelligence (AI). The company said AI is accelerating the development of malicious hacking tools, meaning attackers can exploit publicly disclosed vulnerabilities much faster. To adapt, Apple needs to shorten the window between disclosure of a vulnerability and deployment of a fix to users.

Historically, Apple typically bundled security patches with larger software updates — for example when transitioning between iOS versions such as from the current 26.5 to the planned 26.6. During those intervals, developers and testers examined the new software to find and fix bugs.

Now, however, the company has made clear that critical security updates will not necessarily wait for a major version change: Reuters reports that the latest fixes are already available to all users prior to the official, broad release of iOS 26.6.

Apple also stated there is no indication that the newly patched vulnerabilities have been exploited. Nevertheless, the company emphasized the need to reduce the time between public disclosure of vulnerabilities and the installation of patches given the changing threat landscape.

This adjustment marks a notable shift in Apple’s update policy, aiming to provide a narrower and more purposeful defensive window against rapidly evolving malicious tools.
