Amazon Web Services (AWS) has created a new internal organization focused on forward-deployed engineers (FDEs). Announced on Tuesday, the team will embed engineers at customer sites to deploy purpose-built agents and prioritize rapid engagements and customer self-sufficiency.
Purpose and operating model
AWS said the unit will do more than build and operate requested systems. In the announcement, AWS Vice President of Frontier AI Francessca Vasquez emphasized that customers leave AWS FDE deployments with both working agentic systems running in their own AWS environment and with lasting engineering capabilities, workflows, and patterns that enable independent innovation.
Amazon stated it will commit $1 billion to the new organization. The company clarified that this figure refers to internal Amazon resources rather than a joint venture or an external investment.
Why the FDE model is used
The forward-deployed engineer model, pioneered by Palantir, has become a common approach for managing AI rollouts. Under this model, an engineer from the contracting firm (in this case AWS) temporarily works on-site or closely with the client while the system is established, allowing rapid response as internal opportunities or issues appear.
The model supports reuse of technology components across deployments while tailoring implementations to each company's specific needs and workflows. It also injects expertise into the client organization and places primary responsibility for deployment with the contractor. The main drawback is the labor requirement: maintaining a standing corps of FDE engineers to install and maintain systems.
Market context
Other organizations have pursued similar strategies. OpenAI and Anthropic recently launched FDE-style joint ventures valued at $4 billion and $1.5 billion, respectively. In those cases, the AI labs partnered with private equity firms that provided capital to launch the ventures and connections to potential corporate clients in their portfolios.
AWS’s move signals that cloud providers are increasingly willing to embed their experts within customer environments to accelerate AI adoption and to leave clients with both deployed systems and internal capabilities to continue innovating independently.
