Anthropic confidentially files IPO prospectus with U.S. regulator

Anthropic, the San Francisco–based artificial intelligence company, has confidentially submitted an IPO prospectus to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Because the filing was made confidentially, detailed information such as precise timing or the planned size of any share offering has not been disclosed.

Who they are and what they build

Founded in 2021, Anthropic says it focuses on developing "reliable, interpretable and steerable" AI systems. Its best-known product line is the Claude family of large language models, used for text generation, analysis, programming assistance and enterprise knowledge work.

A distinctive aspect of Anthropic's approach is “Constitutional AI”: Claude’s behaviour is guided by a detailed, publicly described "constitution" that encodes the model’s intended values and conduct. The company presents this method as a means to emphasize safety and controllability.

Investors and valuation

Anthropic has attracted substantial funding and counts major technology companies among its backers, including Amazon and Google. According to a Reuters report at the end of May, the company’s latest financing round produced a valuation of $965 billion, reflecting strong investor expectations.

Why it matters

Anthropic has grown into one of OpenAI’s main rivals in the AI market. A potential public offering would signal further maturation of venture-backed AI firms transitioning toward public markets. Because the SEC filing was confidential, specific financial metrics, the planned offering timetable and pricing details remain undisclosed.
