On February 25, 2026, Anthropic announced it has acquired Vercept to accelerate the Claude family of models' ability to operate inside live applications in the same way a person uses a keyboard and mouse.
Why computer use matters
Anthropic says users are increasingly asking Claude to handle complex work: writing and running code across full repositories, synthesizing research from dozens of sources, and orchestrating workflows that span multiple tools and teams. Computer use enables the model to perceive and act within the actual software environment, allowing it to carry out multi-step tasks that would be impractical or impossible with code alone.
What Vercept brings
Vercept was founded on the idea that making AI genuinely useful for complex tasks requires solving hard perception and interaction problems. The Vercept team, including co-founders Kiana Ehsani, Luca Weihs, and Ross Girshick, have spent years studying how AI systems can both see and act inside the same applications people use daily. Anthropic says that expertise aligns with some of its most difficult technical challenges.
According to the announcement, Vercept will wind down its external product in the coming weeks and the team will join Anthropic to work on advancing computer-use capabilities.
Context and performance metrics
The acquisition follows the release of Sonnet 4.6, which Anthropic cites as a significant step forward in computer use. On OSWorld — a widely used evaluation for AI computer use — Anthropic reports that Sonnet models scored under 15% in late 2024, when the company first released computer use, and have improved to 72.5% as of February 25, 2026. Anthropic says Sonnet 4.6 is now approaching human-level performance on tasks such as navigating complex spreadsheets and completing web forms across browser tabs.
Other hires and recruitment
Vercept is the latest team brought into Anthropic; the company previously acquired Bun. Anthropic states it looks for teams whose technical ambitions and safety-minded approaches match its own.
