According to a post by The Weather on Maps, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has an artificial intelligence–based forecasting system that produced a scenario reminiscent of the “Boris” cyclone of September 2024. That storm caused significant, damaging floods across Central Europe.
The model referred to as AIFS projects a cut-off cyclone sitting over Central Europe, which could generate substantial precipitation. In the scenario the heaviest rainfall would fall across Austria and much of the Czech Republic, with impacts extending into parts of Germany, Slovakia and Hungary. In the higher parts of the Alps some of that precipitation could fall as wet snow.
If this AI-driven forecast proves accurate, it would be a noteworthy result for models that identify analogues, demonstrating whether such systems can better anticipate similar extreme events. However, The Weather on Maps points out that most conventional models — including ECMWF’s probabilistic forecasts — are not presently indicating precipitation amounts of that magnitude. Consequently, the AIFS scenario is treated as an interesting possibility rather than the most likely outcome.
The post also notes that while such an event could cause local damage, widespread heavy precipitation would be welcome for water resources in some basins, notably the Danube catchment. The divergence between the AI forecast and traditional ensemble outputs highlights an area of interest for future assessment of extreme-weather predictability.
