OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries, now available in 89 markets

OpenAI has extended display advertising within ChatGPT to 26 additional countries, bringing availability to a total of 89 markets. The company says the expansion aims to grow its advertising revenue as it prepares for a potential public offering.

What happened and why it matters

OpenAI first began testing ads in the United States, and since then more than 100,000 advertisers have launched campaigns on the platform. In August of last year the company reported that its advertising business had reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion.

The latest rollout adds 14 more Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru; Mexico and Brazil had already been included earlier. Ads will also appear in a range of European, Middle Eastern, African and Asian markets, such as Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

How advertisers access the inventory

Advertisers can buy ChatGPT ad placements through technology partners or manage campaigns directly using OpenAI’s Ads Manager self-serve tool.

A key limitation is that ads appear only in ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers; Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers continue to receive an ad-free experience.

Additional product moves

In September, OpenAI introduced AI-powered tools for advertisers and began testing company-sponsored AI agents with select U.S. advertisers.
