OpenAI announced that a dedicated ChatGPT desktop application is now available for Linux in a preview release. The company said on Tuesday that Linux had been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across all major desktop operating systems.
What the release includes
The Linux app enables users to run ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on a range of distributions. The preview release is worldwide as of Tuesday.
OpenAI lists the following officially supported desktop distributions:
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (desktop variant)
- Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (desktop variant)
- Debian 13
- Fedora 43
- Fedora 44
The broader Linux ecosystem includes hundreds of distributions, but the ones OpenAI selected serve as bases for many downstream desktop distributions or “flavors,” which should also be compatible with the app.
Why this matters
The release expands OpenAI’s desktop product availability to Linux users, a group that previously had limited access to native desktop clients. That matters particularly for open source developers and system administrators who work in Linux-based environments.
Position in the wider market
OpenAI’s move follows a similar step by Anthropic: about a month earlier Anthropic released a Claude desktop app for Linux. Anthropic’s app supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
Status and possible changes
The application is currently offered in preview, which means supported distributions and features may be expanded or adjusted over time as development continues.
