Chinese company BrainCo says its non-invasive brain–computer interface (BCI) platform allows users to control humanoid robots, robot dogs and robotic arms using only their thoughts. The report on the development appeared in Interesting Engineering.
How the system works
- Users wear an electroencephalogram (EEG) device; sensors placed on the head detect the small electrical signals produced by the brain.
- An artificial intelligence system analyzes those signals to determine the user’s intended action.
- Once the software interprets the intent, it converts the thought into commands that a connected robot can execute.
Tests and applications
According to BrainCo, the platform works with a range of physical systems, including humanoid robots, robot dogs and robotic arms. In one described test, a robotic arm was able to grasp objects — for example, a cup or an apple — using only the user’s brain signals for control.
Why this matters
The company argues the technology could help address a major challenge in robotics: producing high-quality training data from systems that interact with the physical world. Currently, relatively little training data comes from setups where AI directly engages with physical objects; BrainCo’s approach aims to reduce that gap.
Future outlook
BrainCo presents the platform as a step toward robots being driven more directly by human intent than before. If the approach proves effective, it could make human–robot interactions more intuitive and simplify the process of training robots for tasks that are difficult to teach today.
