New Detekto lessons teach 13–18-year-olds to spot TikTok diet myths and AI 'hallucinations'

Detekto's updated online courses for 13–18-year-olds introduce modules that help young people evaluate health advice on platforms like TikTok and understand strengths and limits of AI tools.

Detekto’s online courses for 13–18-year-olds have been expanded with new chapters addressing misleading health content on social media and practical aspects of using artificial intelligence. The materials were developed by Idea Alapítvány and produced within the framework of the Magyar Digitális Média Obszervatórium.

What the new modules cover

  • Health and social media: this module examines health tips and diet trends that circulate on TikTok and similar platforms. Short educational videos and tasks built around concrete examples guide students to spot exaggeration, hidden advertising, or other persuasive intents. The curriculum encourages learners to ask key questions: who is making the claim, what is their purpose, and what evidence supports it.

  • Using artificial intelligence: the other chapter approaches AI from a user perspective, explaining what different AI tools are useful for, where their limits lie, and what risks to watch for. It highlights that AI systems sometimes “hallucinate” — produce plausible-sounding but fabricated information — and shows how to recognize and respond to such outputs.

Learning approach and objectives

Detekto’s courses go beyond definitions and quizzes: the units build on one another and use interactive exercises with continuous feedback so students progress step by step toward critical insights. The aim is not merely to elicit correct answers but to develop learners’ ability to ask the right questions and verify information through their own reasoning.

Support for classroom use

Although primarily designed for independent study, the courses are also meant to complement school lessons. Each chapter includes a teacher guide offering concrete ideas for classroom implementation. The AI chapter is additionally available in English, making it suitable for integration into English-language lessons.

Overall, the new Detekto materials provide practical tools for 13–18-year-olds to approach digital content critically and confidently, whether dealing with health claims or responses from AI chat systems.
