After years in which companies reduced outstanding share counts via buybacks, U.S. equity markets may see a wave of net issuance. Bloomberg reports that JPMorgan estimates roughly $1.5 trillion of new stock could appear on the market over the next two years.
What happened so far
One of the defining market trends of the past two decades was a shrinking supply of listed shares: S&P 500 companies have repurchased about $12 trillion worth of stock. Those buybacks provided significant support to equity prices.
What JPMorgan expects and what’s changing
JPMorgan analysts say the trend may reverse. Their estimate is that over the next two years, initial public offerings (IPOs), follow-on offerings and other capital raises could result in a net issuance of about $1.5 trillion of new shares, even after accounting for ongoing buybacks. If realized, this would be the largest net issuance wave since the late 1990s.
Drivers of the new issuance
Several factors are cited as driving the potential increase in supply: the large financing needs of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) projects, and the planned market debuts of major AI-related companies. The article highlights the recent SpaceX listing, which sold $75 billion of stock in the largest IPO in its history; the share rose 19 percent on its first trading day.
Bloomberg also notes that markets are preparing for possible debuts by OpenAI and Anthropic, and that established tech firms such as Alphabet, Meta and Oracle may undertake significant share issuances to fund large AI investments.
Why it matters
A rise in net share issuance could change market dynamics: buybacks have previously reduced share counts and supported prices, while a large influx of new stock could put downward pressure on valuations and affect investment strategies.
Caution
The Bloomberg report and JPMorgan estimate are market forecasts, not investment advice. Actual issuance volumes and market impacts will depend on forthcoming IPOs, secondary offerings and corporate financing decisions in the months ahead.
