Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) provides access to technologies such as 3D printing, IoT and robotics for more than 1.1 crore students across India. The initiative is now incorporating AI to scale high-quality mentorship, shifting emphasis from merely providing physical lab infrastructure to driving outcomes like faster innovation and improved learning metrics.

Announcement and pilot

At the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, Google DeepMind announced plans to help integrate robotics and coding into local curricula, thoughtfully incorporate Gemini into teacher workflows, and build a safely-guardrailed AI assistant for students based on national curriculum standards. As part of that effort, DeepMind launched a live pilot of ATL Saathi, a Gemini-powered web application that offers every Tinkering Lab educator a 24/7 planning and training assistant.

Google's ongoing role in education

Google says it has supported the education ecosystem for over 20 years by introducing technology with a teacher-led approach. Platforms such as Google for Education and Google Classroom are designed to meet schools’ needs while keeping teachers in the lead. The Google Educator AI Series aims to equip teachers with the tools and digital skills required in today’s classrooms, and Google DeepMind positions Gemini as a tool partners can use to create augmented learning experiences.

DeepMind has been working closely with the Atal Innovation Mission, which is part of NITI Aayog, the Government of India’s flagship effort to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. The collaboration aims to ensure ATL Saathi is grounded in teachers’ needs, reflects ATL’s pedagogical principles, and supports the stated goal to “Cultivate one Million children in India as Neoteric Innovators.”

Key features of ATL Saathi

  1. Streamlined onboarding and content curation
  • All ATL training modules and curriculum materials are organized and maintained within NotebookLM so educators have access to up-to-date content.
  • The application provides summarized modules, AI-generated infographics, video overviews and interactive quizzes for 12 core modules from the ATL-prescribed curriculum.
  • This micro-learning approach reduces reliance on lengthy videos and helps teachers quickly familiarize themselves with complex topics.
  1. Advanced project generation (Push & Pull mentorship)
  • For 10 core modules, teachers can use an advanced project generation interface that supports both “push” and “pull” teaching mechanisms.
  • Generate project ideas (Push): teachers can instantly create grade-appropriate, curriculum-aligned project suggestions to inspire students.
  • Detailed experiments (Pull): when students bring their own problem statements, the AI provides step-by-step assembly instructions, wiring diagrams and necessary safety precautions to implement those ideas safely.
  1. Multilingual accessibility
  • Recognizing India’s linguistic diversity, the assistant allows educators to interact in their preferred language and generates materials in the same language. At launch it supports 8 languages, with flexibility to add more.

Leveraging Gemini

  • The Gemini model supplies the underlying intelligence that aims to turn tinkering labs into AI-augmented discovery environments.
  • Gemini can create concise instructional materials—including AI infographics, video overviews and interactive quizzes—to help teachers navigate complex training materials and adopt micro-learning content.
  • The announced Gemini 3.5 Flash model can instantly generate grade-appropriate, curriculum-aligned project ideas and provide educators with step-by-step assembly instructions, wiring diagrams and safety precautions for unique student-proposed problems.

Pilot rollout and expectations

  • ATL Saathi will be rolled out to an initial cohort of 100 pilot schools across the country.
