China's Moonshot AI unveils 2.8 trillion-parameter open-weight model Kimi K3

Chinese startup Moonshot AI last week announced its Kimi K3 artificial intelligence model, which the company describes as the largest open-weight AI model in the world.

What the Kimi K3 is

Moonshot states that Kimi K3 contains 2.8 trillion parameters. According to the company, this currently makes it the largest open-weight language model; direct comparison with models from OpenAI and Anthropic is not possible because those firms do not disclose exact parameter counts.

A key advantage of open-weight models is that developers can download the trained weights, run them on their own infrastructure, and further develop the systems. This contrasts with closed systems such as ChatGPT or Claude, whose internal weights and training details are not publicly available.

It should be noted that “open weight” does not necessarily mean fully open source—training code, data, architecture details and full reproducibility may still be withheld.

Performance and context window

Moonshot’s internal benchmarks indicate that, overall, Kimi K3 still trails Anthropic’s flagship Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Sol. However, the company says the model is competitive on several programming and AI-agent benchmarks and outperforms earlier GPT and Claude models and Elon Musk’s Grok on certain tests.

Reuters reported that the model can handle context windows of up to one million tokens, which could be advantageous for processing very long documents and complex tasks.

Development despite U.S. chip restrictions

Bank of America analysts interpret the Kimi K3 announcement as evidence that Chinese AI developers can achieve significant technical progress despite U.S. export controls and limited access to high-end Nvidia chips. They attribute much of the advancement to more efficient training methods and architectural improvements.

Company background and financials

Moonshot AI was founded in 2023. Investors include Alibaba and Tencent. This year the company participated in an almost $2 billion funding round that put its valuation above $20 billion, and it reported annual recurring revenue (ARR) of more than $200 million.

Why this matters

The launch of Kimi K3 highlights the growing role of open-weight models in allowing researchers and enterprises to run and adapt large AI systems on their own infrastructure. It also signals that domestic innovation and software-level optimizations can drive substantial progress even when access to cutting-edge hardware is constrained.
