Reliance Jio, the company controlled by Mukesh Ambani, has opened its JioPC cloud PC service to any internet user in India as a standalone subscription, regardless of the customer’s telecom or broadband provider. Jio originally launched JioPC in July 2025 for its own broadband subscribers; the service was expanded on Wednesday to non-Jio users.
The service streams a virtual PC running in Jio’s cloud to the user’s existing computer, moving processing and storage off the local device. Jio’s published plans provide up to eight virtual CPUs (vCPUs), 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage.
Pricing and configurations
- Two-month subscription starts at ₹1,000 (about $11).
- 12-month subscriptions cost ₹4,000 (about $42) for the 8 GB RAM / 500 GB storage option, or ₹5,000 (about $53) for the 16 GB RAM / 1 TB storage option.
Why it matters in India
Jio says the service can enable even computers as old as eight years to run modern AI applications without users having to replace hardware. IDC estimated more than 65 million PCs were in use in India in 2025—approximately 34 million consumer machines and 31 million commercial ones—and expects the installed base to approach 69 million by the end of 2026.
Lengthening replacement cycles
The move comes amid longer PC replacement cycles in India. Bharath Shenoy, senior market analyst at IDC, told TechCrunch that consumers and small businesses typically replace PCs every five to six years now, compared with four to five years in 2022. Enterprises have also stretched replacement cycles to about four years, up from roughly three years previously.
Business rationale and limits
Jio is betting that shifting compute and storage into its data centers can further extend device lifecycles, letting users keep older machines on their desks while the company scales capacity in the cloud. Prabhu Ram, vice president of industry research at Gurugram-based CyberMedia Research, said JioPC could create a market where people pay for computing capability rather than repeatedly buying new hardware.
Ram does not expect this model to fully replace conventional PCs; instead, he sees JioPC creating a parallel, price-sensitive tier for households, students and others “for whom buying a new AI-capable PC was never really on the table to begin with.”
Challenges: connectivity and competition
Indians have traditionally preferred owning hardware rather than subscribing to PCs-as-a-service, Shenoy noted. Jio must persuade consumers that a recurring fee is worth the trade-offs, including losing the ability to work offline when the internet is down. The JioPC experience requires a stable internet connection; disruptions can degrade usability in ways that do not affect conventional, locally run PCs.
At the low end, refurbished PCs present competition by letting consumers own inexpensive hardware without ongoing dependence on connectivity.
Technical questions
Jio has disclosed little about the underlying hardware that powers the cloud instances. The published specifications do not mention dedicated AI accelerators for on-device generative AI workloads, a key feature of the newest generation of AI-capable PCs.
The real test
For Jio, the pivotal question is whether users will start treating cloud compute as a daily utility rather than an opportunistic workaround, and whether they will be willing to pay for compute capacity instead of buying new machines. The service’s success will therefore hinge on reliable internet availability, consumer willingness to shift to subscription models, and competition from low-cost refurbished hardware.
