Northrop Grumman has put a collaborative robot (cobot) into service in the production of avionics modules for the F-35 fighter, and is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI)–based inspection systems, the company announced on September 30, 2026.
Changes on the production line
The cobot is being used to insert the screws that secure the front panel of the F-35 communication, navigation and identification (CNI) module. That step previously required several hours of manual work; with the robot, the operation has been reduced to a few minutes. The company says the cobot does not replace full assembly work but supports technicians by working alongside them.
The affected system
The F-35 uses Northrop Grumman’s AN/ASQ-242 CNI system. The module integrates multiple functions in a largely software-defined avionics architecture, including friend-or-foe identification (IFF), precision navigation, voice communications and tactical data link. Because these capabilities are tightly integrated with the aircraft’s broader onboard systems, consistent manufacturing quality of the modules is important for an uninterrupted supply chain.
AI-based inspections
In addition to the cobot, Northrop Grumman is expanding AI-based quality inspection equipment. The new systems scan completed CNI modules to detect potential manufacturing defects before the units leave the factory, adding another inspection stage prior to installation on the aircraft.
Impact and limitations
According to the company, the changes do not directly alter the F-35’s combat capabilities, but they may help ensure more uniform avionics components for U.S. and international customers. The real industrial impact will depend on whether automation and AI inspection can materially reduce rework, production delays and quality issues at higher production volumes.
Northrop Grumman has not announced any Pentagon-agreed increase in F-35 production rates directly tied to the deployment of the cobot or the AI inspection systems.
