Nvidia introduced two new processors optimized for artificial intelligence, aiming to run AI workloads and agents directly on laptops and desktop PCs rather than relying solely on cloud computation.
The company, led by CEO Jensen Huang, presented the RTX Spark chip and a central processor called Vera. According to Huang, RTX Spark was developed as part of a three-year collaboration with Microsoft, with Taiwan-based MediaTek also participating. One stated goal of the project was to "reinvent the PC" for the era of artificial intelligence.
What the chips do and who will use them first
- RTX Spark is intended to enable AI-related features to run locally on users' machines, reducing dependence on continuous cloud connections.
- The Vera CPU was specifically designed to run AI agents. Nvidia has said that Vera could open a substantial new market for the company; in a May quarterly earnings commentary Huang estimated that Vera could create roughly a $200 billion market opportunity for Nvidia.
Early users named by Nvidia include OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX.
Market and industry reactions
Neil Shah, co-founder of Counterpoint Research, said RTX Spark could fundamentally change traditional application-centric computers: these machines could become genuinely useful devices powered by AI agents and may reach every household within a few years. Shah compared the significance of the announcement to the launches of the iPhone, ChatGPT and DeepSeek.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, speaking at Computex, said he expects 2026 to be the real turning point for agent-based AI. Amon argued that current device architectures are designed for user-initiated actions and are not well suited to continuously running, autonomous AI agents.
Labor market and business implications
Jensen Huang addressed concerns about employment, calling fears that AI would reduce demand for software engineers "complete nonsense." He argued that AI increases productivity and will ultimately lead to hiring more developers.
After the announcement, Nvidia shares were up about 1.8% in premarket trading.
Why this matters
The launch of RTX Spark and Vera signals a shift in the industry toward on-device AI processing. If these chips are widely adopted by hardware makers and software developers, they could change how personal computers are used — moving from single, user-initiated tasks toward experiences supported by continuously operating, autonomous AI agents.
