Omio is a leading multimodal travel platform that connects travelers with trains, buses, ferries and flights. The company works with more than 3,000 transportation providers and its network spans 47 countries. As travel becomes ever more digital, Omio is rethinking how journeys are discovered and booked by using conversational artificial intelligence (AI).
Why the shift?
Consumer expectations are moving toward natural-language, conversational interfaces. Traditional travel planning often involves visiting multiple websites, comparing modes of transport, and stitching together itineraries from different providers. Omio identified an opportunity for AI to provide a fundamentally different experience: travelers describe where they want to go and receive personalized, bookable itineraries in return.
Early OpenAI partnership and 2023 launch
As an early OpenAI customer and partner, Omio was among the first travel companies to experiment with conversational travel experiences built on real-time transportation data. In 2023 the company launched one of the earliest travel experiences available through ChatGPT, connecting OpenAI models directly to Omio’s transportation inventory and booking systems.
This integration allowed travelers to ask natural-language questions such as “What’s the fastest route from Rome to Florence?” or “Should I take a train or flight from Paris to Barcelona?” Instead of returning static information, the experience pulled from live inventory and pricing data, letting users discover real, bookable journeys through conversation.
Expanding the conversational vision
More recently Omio expanded that approach with a dedicated ChatGPT experience built on OpenAI models and tied into its global transportation network. By grounding responses in verified travel data, the company is advancing toward a new category of conversational commerce in which AI acts as the interface between customers and real-world transportation systems.
AI as a foundational change, not just a feature
For Omio, conversational travel is more than a product add-on; it signals a shift from search-based interfaces to AI-native customer experiences. While developing AI-powered consumer features, the company simultaneously reworked how teams operate internally.
Internal transformation: ChatGPT and Codex across teams
Omio rolled out ChatGPT across the organization to let teams experiment and identify efficiency gains. As adoption matured, the company introduced Codex and embedded it deeply into engineering workflows, then extended usage across non-technical functions.
Today every engineer uses Codex across the software development lifecycle—from research and planning to coding, testing, code reviews, monitoring, and maintenance. Omio is also building custom integrations and connectors that bring internal systems, data, and workflows directly into AI-powered tools so employees can move beyond information retrieval to execution.
Faster development and lower cost to prototype
Omio estimates that many products can now be built in about 20% of the time previously required. Tomas Vocetka, Omio’s CTO, says: “Projects that used to take several developers a quarter can now be done by one developer in around a month.” Shorter development cycles have enabled more experimentation, faster decisions, and better validation of ideas before larger investments.
Responsible deployment and human oversight
Throughout the transformation Omio has maintained a focus on responsible deployment. By combining broad access to OpenAI tools with governance mechanisms and human oversight, the company aims to accelerate execution while keeping employees accountable for outcomes.
Twin impact: customers and operations
Omio sees AI reshaping both the customer-facing side of the business—how travelers discover, compare, and book transportation—and the internal side—how teams build products and operate at scale. The company expects travel’s future to be less about combing search results and more about interacting with intelligent systems connected directly to live transportation networks.
Present practice, ongoing change
As Omio continues to scale its AI-native approach, it is defining what conversational commerce in travel can look like by combining OpenAI models with real transportation infrastructure to make planning faster, simpler and more personalized. For Omio, becoming AI-native is not a distant ambition but an active transformation already changing how travel is discovered, booked and delivered today.
