OpenAI announced it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc ("Pierre"), the developer behind Code Storage and a set of notable open-source developer tools. According to the announcement, the Trees and Diffs libraries created by Pierre are already used in the Codex app for browsing files and reviewing changes.
Why this matters
OpenAI says it plans to work with the Pierre team to evolve Git-based workflows so they better support parallel work and interactions between human developers and coding agents. The company notes that it is already scaling Git internally with Pando, its in-house source control backend for engineers and agents, and expects the acquisition to help set standards for modern software development.
Pierre’s tools and capabilities
The announcement highlights several Pierre components that are integrated into or complement Codex:
- Trees: a library for fast navigation of a project’s files.
- Diffs: a high-performance library for viewing changes; its Edit mode allows reviewers to fix a line of code directly where they spot the issue.
- Highlights: a very fast syntax highlighter that updates as a developer types or when an agent streams code.
- Code Storage: an API-driven service that lets applications store code and track its history using Git-like semantics.
OpenAI emphasized the care Pierre applies to code review and large-scale code navigation, and noted these libraries are already used within Codex.
Plans and assurances
OpenAI said it will ship new products and platforms with the Pierre team and aims to advance source control across the industry. The company wants Codex to connect shipped code with the decisions that teams make at the scale that future work will demand.
Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open-source, and OpenAI will continue contributing to them. Customers can continue using Code Storage after the acquisition closes while its features are integrated into Codex.
Timing and conditions
The acquisition’s closing is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of regulatory approvals. Until the transaction closes, OpenAI and Pierre will operate as separate and independent companies.
In sum, the acquisition signals OpenAI’s intent to strengthen Codex’s capabilities for building, navigating and reviewing code by incorporating Pierre’s Git-focused libraries and services, while maintaining the projects’ open-source status.
