OpenAI, the World Association of News Publishers (WAN‑IFRA) and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) have announced a joint programme designed to build practical AI capabilities within Ukrainian independent news organisations. Developed by AIRPPU in partnership with WAN‑IFRA and OpenAI, the initiative aims to help newsrooms use artificial intelligence to improve sustainability, efficiency and resilience amid ongoing conflict.
Programme components
The programme consists of two complementary strands:

Newsroom AI Masterclass Series: Building on prior WAN‑IFRA and OpenAI initiatives, this series brings together international experts and practitioners to share practical knowledge, case studies and implementation approaches. Covered topics include editorial workflows, audience engagement, product development, revenue generation, organisational change and responsible AI adoption.

Newsroom AI Catalyst: This stream delivers deeper, hands‑on support to ten participating Ukrainian news organisations. It helps them identify high‑impact use cases, develop implementation roadmaps and pilot AI‑enabled solutions tailored to their specific needs.
All participating organisations will receive credits to OpenAI’s API to support the development of bespoke newsroom tools.
Timeline and context
The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series began on 5 August 2026, and the Newsroom AI Catalyst is scheduled to start on 17 September 2026. The programme builds on WAN‑IFRA’s global work supporting AI adoption in newsrooms—through leadership programmes, research, peer learning and implementation projects—and on OpenAI’s ongoing collaborations with news organisations worldwide.

By combining training, practical pilot support and API credits, the initiative aims to provide concrete tools and roadmaps for independent regional and local publishers operating under difficult conditions. The focus is on applying AI to strengthen editorial efficiency, audience and revenue strategies, and organisational resilience while emphasising responsible use and press freedom.
