Schneider Electric has launched the Uniflair XCA family of air-cooled and free-cooling chillers, developed specifically for AI-driven, high-density and liquid-cooled data center environments. The company says the platform delivers improved energy efficiency, operational stability and very low noise levels across a wide range of heat loads and ambient conditions.

Technical basis and performance

The Uniflair XCA range includes two main variants: the Uniflair XCAC (air-cooled) and the Uniflair XCAF (free-cooling). The units integrate oil-free centrifugal compressors with magnetic bearing technology and built-in variable frequency drives. According to Schneider Electric, these features can provide up to 25 percent higher efficiency and extremely low noise compared with conventional solutions.

The XCA series is offered in six sizes from 1200 kW to 2500 kW. It uses an advanced heat-exchanger architecture that combines a spray evaporator with V-shaped microchannel coils, reducing refrigerant charge, material usage and overall environmental footprint while supporting higher water temperatures—an important capability for liquid-cooled and AI-optimized data centers.

Free-cooling capability and operating range

XCAF free-cooling models take advantage of the new coil geometry and support output water temperatures up to 33 °C, which significantly improves annual performance. Schneider Electric states the systems operate across extreme ambient conditions (from –20 °C to +52 °C) and that, in temperate climates, free cooling can reduce energy use by up to 60 percent compared with purely mechanical cooling, extending free-cooling availability and lowering dependence on mechanical chillers.

Configurability, maintenance and reliability

The XCA platform offers high configurability with electrical, hydraulic, acoustic and performance-enhancing options to meet site-specific requirements. The oil-free, magnetic-bearing compressors eliminate the need for lubrication systems, lowering maintenance demands and contamination risk.

The company also highlights fast restart capability: the system supports rapid recovery of full operating capacity within three minutes after a power outage for critical applications, reducing potential downtime.

Sustainability and regulatory compliance

The Uniflair XCA is designed to comply with the EU 2024/573 F-gas regulation and ships as standard with very low-GWP refrigerants to help limit greenhouse gas impact.

Software-driven control and real-time optimization

Building on Schneider Electric’s digital capabilities, the XCA introduces firmware features that optimize performance in real time, including:

  • variable-speed pump algorithms to maintain constant flow, constant delta-T or constant pressure;
  • advanced fan controls that enable low- and very-low-noise modes based on temperature, load or schedule;
  • energy consumption metering and real-time water-flow measurement for better transparency.

These functions are intended to reduce compressor cycling, improve efficiency and increase overall system stability.

Timing

Schneider Electric says global deliveries of the first Uniflair XCA chillers will begin in June 2026.

Andrew Bradner, Vice President of Schneider Electric’s "Cooling Business" division, emphasized that energy efficiency, adaptability and reliability are essential for liquid-cooling systems in AI-optimized data centers, and that the Uniflair XCA was designed with those priorities in mind. He noted the platform’s ability to adapt to water-temperature variations and its deployment flexibility as system-level benefits for operators.
