Spotify will begin applying a new label to artist profiles that represent AI-generated personas, the BBC reports. The feature, called "AI Persona," will be rolled out gradually from mid-September on selected accounts.
Where the label appears and why
The badge will be visible on the affected artist profiles’ cover art and biography, and it will also show up in search results and next to tracks appearing in playlists. Spotify says the aim is to give listeners clearer information about whether an artist profile represents a human performer or an AI-generated entity.
Personalized recommendations and follower rule
According to Spotify, artists marked with the AI Persona label will be excluded from users’ personalized recommendations unless the listener already follows that profile. This approach is intended to limit unsolicited exposure while preserving access for existing followers.
Label scope: persona versus music production
The company emphasized that the label applies only to the artist persona itself, not to how a song was produced. Spotify recognizes that musicians increasingly use AI tools during the creative process, and that such use does not automatically mean the performing persona is AI-generated.
AI Credits and current disclosures
Spotify already offers an AI Credits feature, through which artists can disclose if they used artificial intelligence when making a track. The company says tens of thousands of creators use this disclosure daily.
Voluntary disclosure, platform review and appeals
Spotify hopes AI-originated profiles will self-declare, but it will also review accounts and apply the label based on its own checks when appropriate. Flagged artists can appeal Spotify’s decision, and the badge will indicate whether the profile declared its AI origin voluntarily or was labeled after Spotify’s review.
Why it matters
The move reflects a broader push by streaming platforms and the music industry for greater transparency as generative AI becomes more widespread. Spotify said the change is partly a response to listener concerns about discovering after the fact that a seemingly human artist is actually AI-generated.
