Station F, the Paris-based startup campus founded by French billionaire Xavier Niel, is preparing to run the second edition of its F/ai artificial intelligence accelerator. Launched in January of this year, the program’s second cohort is scheduled to begin in September, with the ambition of helping a small number of AI-focused startups move rapidly from early products to paying customers.
Station F occupies 538,000 square feet and is often described as a coworking space, but its influence goes beyond the physical site, Station F director Roxanne Varza told TechCrunch. One example of its broader role is the Station F Future 40 list, an annual selection of the most promising teams from the roughly 1,000 companies the campus hosts each year. In 2024, TechCrunch noted that nearly all companies in that cohort had AI at their core.
Today Station F has a front-row seat on the growth of AI startups and serves as a pillar of “la French Tech.” The hub has also used its position to take equity stakes in some Future 40 companies; Varza said Station F has been investing in those startups since 2022.
Thanks to its size and Xavier Niel’s connections, Station F is a frequent stop for officials and industry figures: it has hosted at least 11 presidential visits since Emmanuel Macron’s inaugural tour in 2017. The site has also welcomed AI leaders such as Sam Altman, ties the campus is now leveraging for F/ai.
The first F/ai cohort was supported by a long list of major tech companies — AMD, Anthropic, AWS, Clay, Google, G42, Hugging Face, Lovable, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, OpenAI, OVHcloud, Snowflake, and Qualcomm — and several VC funds. For the second cohort, a few more partners will join, including Eleven Labs, Nebius, Rippling, OpenRouter, HubSpot, and GitHub.
"The goal was to bring together all the major players and make it much easier for [AI] startups looking to launch in Europe to connect with them," Varza said.
Two teams from the accelerator’s inaugural batch have already earned international recognition: Alpic won the global grand finale of The Pitch, a competition organized by Deel, and Rippletide won the OpenAI Codex Hackathon. Beyond awards, the F/ai program focuses on commercialization: it aims for cohort companies to reach €1 million (about $1.14 million) in revenue within six months. "We’d heard quite a bit of criticism about the slow pace of commercialization of European startups. This brings them on par with what investors are seeing in the U.S.," Varza said.
Investors appear to welcome the results so far: the first cohort collectively raised $34 million in pre-seed funding, Station F says. The founder profile of the 20 AI startups skewed toward experienced entrepreneurs — 80% were repeat founders and one-third held PhDs.
Selection for F/ai is done exclusively via recommendations from founders, partners, and investors rather than open applications, a process that may reinforce perceptions of cliquishness and elitism sometimes leveled at France’s tech scene. Varza noted that while teams cannot apply directly, they can reach out to one of F/ai’s many partners and, perhaps soon, to alumni. She added that Station F runs roughly 30 other programs that startups can apply to.
Access to senior experts and networks is a clear emphasis for F/ai: the program has previously hosted private chats with figures such as Turing Award winner Yann LeCun. "Today, if the founders here want to speak to people at this level, they all seem to think they need to go to the U.S. and join a program there. We actually want to show that you can stay here and do it from here," Varza said.
