AMD and Anthropic agree multi‑billion‑dollar AI compute deal, including up to 2 GW of MI450 capacity and possible $5B equity investment

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Anthropic have struck a multi‑billion‑dollar agreement under which Anthropic can acquire up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 accelerators beginning in early 2027, and AMD may invest up to $5 billion of equity as deployment milestones are met.

AMD and Anthropic agree multi‑billion‑dollar AI compute deal, including up to 2 GW of MI450 capacity and possible $5B equity investment

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Anthropic have reached a multi‑billion‑dollar agreement for artificial‑intelligence server capacity. Under the deal, Anthropic can acquire up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s next‑generation Instinct MI450 accelerators, with deliveries and deployments beginning in the first half of 2027.

Equity investment tied to deployment milestones

As part of the agreement, AMD may also make an equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic if the company meets specified deployment milestones. This would be AMD’s first direct capital injection into the startup.

Why the agreement matters

  • For Anthropic, the deal secures large‑scale compute capacity it needs to operate modern large language models and AI services at scale; the company previously had to limit access to its services and experienced outages due to capacity constraints.
  • For AMD, the contract materially strengthens its position against market leader Nvidia as AI developers seek to diversify their supply chains.

Deployment model and potential guarantees

Anthropic will purchase some of the hardware for its own data centers and lease additional capacity through major cloud providers. Reports indicate AMD is also negotiating to provide financial guarantees for Anthropic’s future data‑center leases — a growing practice among investment‑grade technology companies supporting AI startups.

Current hardware mix at Anthropic

Anthropic today runs workloads on multiple accelerator types, including Google’s tensor processing units (TPU), Amazon Trainium chips, and Nvidia GPUs. The new agreement positions AMD’s chips as a significant component of Anthropic’s future compute mix.

Engineering collaboration and software optimisation

AMD and Anthropic engineers have been working closely together. The deal includes engineering collaboration to optimise Anthropic’s Claude models for the performance characteristics of the Instinct MI450 chips. AMD has previously faced slower uptake partly because developers are less familiar with the software stack required to operate AMD accelerators; to attract large customers the company has offered incentives such as stock options.

Broader context

AMD has in recent years pursued a stronger position in the accelerator market and has signed notable deals with other AI players, including OpenAI and Meta Platforms. This agreement could further boost AMD’s competitiveness while helping Anthropic meet surging demand for its AI services.

Timeline and planning

Lisa Su, AMD’s chief executive officer, noted that acquiring capacity at this scale cannot be done overnight and requires 12–24 months of forward planning. The arrangement therefore represents a long‑term strategic collaboration for both companies.
