In early June 2026, Vladimir Putin told the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that Russia was making steady gains along the front and that Ukraine was suffering heavy losses. At the same time, Ukrainian drones have been striking Russian targets regularly, sometimes just a few kilometers from cities, highlighting a sharp divergence between Russian official claims and battlefield developments in the war’s fifth year.
Since the turn of 2025–2026 there has been a statistically measurable shift: in February 2026 Ukraine recorded for the first time since August 2024 that it gained more territory than Russia. Analysts emphasize that this change is not the result of a single dramatic breakthrough but of deeper structural shifts in how the war is being waged.
Attrition as the operating logic
After the mid-2023 stalemate, the conflict settled into an attritional mode: the focus moved from rapid territorial gains to wearing down the opponent’s material, economic and human resources. Russia’s calculations relied on time and larger absolute stocks of personnel and materiel, while Ukraine pursued higher-efficiency and technology-based attrition, betting on Western precision weapons and domestic drone capabilities.
By late 2025 Russian advances had slowed but still produced gradual gains. Then at the turn of the year the trend unexpectedly reversed: by May 2026 Russia’s net territorial gain had fallen sharply — the most recent balance showed Russia holding only a 26 km² advantage compared with 714 km² in the same period a year earlier.
What explains the reversal?
Experts point to two principal drivers behind Ukraine’s regained initiative:

Extending the war into Russia’s rear areas: Kyiv massively increased drone production and has conducted repeated deep strikes against refineries, ports and airfields. These attacks have not only damaged energy supplies and exports but also brought the war closer to ordinary Russian life; in 2026 strikes have affected much of Russia’s European territory.

Closing the “mid-rear” gap: technological advances — mass production of drones, mesh communications between platforms, Starlink-enabled connectivity, and onboard AI-driven machine vision — have allowed drones to operate effectively 20–100 km behind the front. This lets Ukrainian systems reach ammunition dumps, fuel depots, command posts and logistics convoys that previously were protected by range limits, electronic warfare and air defenses. In the terminal phase many drones now operate autonomously, identifying and striking moving targets without direct pilot control.
Together, these capabilities have sustained pressure on Russian supply lines and disrupted frontline logistics, producing operational chaos and rapidly degrading the combat power of some Russian units that typically hold only days to a couple of weeks of supplies.
Narratives, domestic politics and military tempo
Moscow has partly tried to counter unfavorable battlefield trends through narrative control. At the forum Putin asserted continued Russian progress, claimed Russian weapons superiority and repeated figures alleging that Ukraine loses 40,000 people monthly with an additional 20,000 desertions per month. Such messaging matters for recruitment: Russia has maintained conscription levels with increasing payments and bonuses, so public perception of military success is important to sustain manpower.
Since May, Russia has also increased missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian rear areas, a pattern consistent with demonstrating continued offensive capacity.
Outlook
The current, Ukraine-favorable phase does not automatically mean the war has decisively turned. The conflict is inherently cyclical: advantages can prompt adaptation and countermeasures. Whether Ukraine’s drone- and tech-driven approach produces a lasting strategic reversal, or whether Russia adapts and restores its attritional advantages, is likely to become clearer over the next six months.
If the trend persists, it will indicate that Ukraine’s strategy is working and that Russian resources are being worn down. If Moscow manages to adapt effectively, the war’s attritional, wave-like dynamics are likely to continue.
