Andrew Dai, a former researcher at Google DeepMind, founded Elorian and closed a $55 million seed round that values the company at $300 million just months after leaving DeepMind. He discussed the raise and his vision in a Build Mode podcast interview with Isabelle Johannessen.
Why visual AI?
Dai, who spent more than a decade contributing to influential AI systems—including research that later informed development related to ChatGPT—argues that visual understanding and visual reasoning are major next frontiers in AI. “There are models doing really well at math, new physics ideas, and of course coding is very popular now… But one area where progress has been extremely uneven is visual understanding and visual reasoning,” he said. Elorian aims to build models that push toward visual AGI (general visual intelligence).
Fundraising process and investor choices
In the interview Dai walked through the fundraising process from a founder’s perspective, describing how he translated a highly technical vision into a story investors could grasp. He prioritized strategic partners such as Nvidia and Menlo Ventures, even when higher nominal valuations were available. Dai emphasized that for frontier AI companies, investors who understand the practical realities of building advanced models and can provide strategic support are often more valuable than simply maximizing valuation.
Practical lessons for founders
Dai shared several concrete takeaways for founders navigating today’s AI landscape:
- How to explain complex technical products to nontechnical investors without heavy jargon.
- Why speed—rapid iteration and development—has become one of the biggest competitive advantages in AI.
- What founders should look for when selecting venture capital partners.
- How startups can recruit top researchers away from Big Tech.
- How to build durable moats as AI technology evolves.
Context within Build Mode
The conversation with Isabelle Johannessen appears on Build Mode, which this season focuses on various aspects of fundraising: massive pre‑seed rounds, large checks from investors, bootstrapping, going public, and handling unexpected market changes. Full episodes are available on the Build Mode YouTube channel and the podcast is released weekly.
Summary
Elorian raised $55 million in a seed round at a $300 million valuation, signaling aggressive early investor interest in visual AI. Dai underlined the strategic importance of choosing supportive, knowledgeable investors and shared practical guidance for founders building frontier AI ventures.
