At its annual I/O developer conference, Google unveiled a redesigned Search that will surface AI-driven interactive experiences and introduce background 'agents' that can monitor the web and notify users of updates.

Google revamps Search with interactive AI experiences and background 'agents'

At its annual I/O developer conference on Tuesday, Google announced several updates to its products, including a major redesign of its flagship Search service. The company said the revamped "intelligent search box" represents the biggest change to Search in 25 years.

What changes on the interface?

Traditional list-style results will be supplemented — and in some cases replaced — by AI-driven, interactive experiences. The search box will be expanded to accommodate longer, conversational queries. The system will automatically detect which search mode is appropriate: if it senses a user prefers to speak or interact conversationally, it will switch to a chatbot-like experience, help formulate queries, and allow follow-up questions tied to the AI-generated overview.

Agents: continuous monitoring and notifications

Google also announced agent-based capabilities. In practice, users will be able to create agents that run in the background — potentially 24/7 — to monitor the web and notify them when new information appears on a topic, such as changes in a stock price.

The company said the integration of Gemini with its agent-development platform Antigravity will make the results page far more interactive and tailored to queries, producing custom visualizations. Google gave an example that searching about black holes could prompt illustrative visual content.

Mini apps inside Search

Antigravity will also let users create small in-Search "mini apps" via natural-language commands. As reported by TechCrunch, an example could be an app that helps build a meal plan using information from the user’s calendar to suggest what to cook and when to eat.

Timing and possible impact

Google said the redesigned search box will roll out to users this week, while the generative and agent-driven features will arrive over the summer. The company stated these features will be free to use.

TechCrunch noted these changes are likely to reduce referral traffic from Google to external sites, since the search results themselves will surface more information directly. That could leave limited time for publishers and sites to adapt.

Summary

Google’s I/O announcements point to a substantially expanded Search experience: a conversational-ready interface, background agents, and user-created mini apps powered by Gemini and Antigravity. The updates begin this week and will continue rolling out through the summer, and Google says they will be available at no cost.
