The U.S. Department of Defense has rolled out customized versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok, providing access to generative AI tools for about 3 million civilian and military personnel. Both ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now available through GenAI.mil, the DoD’s centralized secure portal.
GenAI.mil: a secure gateway to commercial frontier models
GenAI.mil was launched last year to give Department of Defense employees controlled access to commercial frontier AI models without routing sensitive government data through ordinary consumer channels. When the portal first opened it included Google Gemini among its offerings. The military-specific instances are exempt from the kinds of data collection that are often unavoidable in consumer products.
According to the Department of Defense, GenAI.mil has proven popular: the portal has onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users out of the department’s approximately 3 million personnel.
Intended uses of ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government
ChatGPT Mil stems from OpenAI for Government and, per the Defense Department, will provide an experience familiar to commercial ChatGPT users. The tool will emphasize chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, and is intended to support document-heavy, routine unclassified work such as administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy. Additional capabilities are expected to be added over time.
The Pentagon described Grok for Government in broader, more operational terms. The Defense Department’s press release stated: “Starshield AI’s Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration.” The department also said Grok would enable military personnel to execute missions faster and with greater precision across various operational contexts, from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply-chain management for logisticians.

Context: vendors and the Anthropic dispute
These additions are part of a broader Pentagon effort to accelerate work and gain an edge using commercial AI while maintaining security. The rollout also highlights the absence of Anthropic’s Claude model: Anthropic and the Pentagon have been at odds after the company refused to grant the DoD unrestricted use of its AI tools and instead required certain safety guardrails. The Trump administration designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, a classification the company is currently contesting in court.
The Pentagon has also struck deals with a number of other technology companies to expand its AI capabilities, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
Why this matters
Providing secure, government-tailored access to commercial AI models lets the Department of Defense leverage rapidly advancing capabilities without exposing sensitive data to consumer platforms. The fact that more than 1.7 million users have been onboarded suggests significant internal demand for these tools within the department.
