Super Micro Computer reported preliminary results indicating its fiscal 2027 first quarter (ended in September) produced significantly higher revenue than the company had previously guided, driven primarily by demand for AI platforms.
- Management estimated Q1 revenue at $18.5–19.5 billion, versus its earlier guidance range of $14.5–15.5 billion. The new range’s lower bound exceeds the previous guidance’s upper bound by $3 billion.
- The analyst consensus collected by LSEG was $15.23 billion; the midpoint of the revised range ($19 billion) is roughly 25% above that consensus.
- About a year earlier the company recorded roughly $5 billion in revenue, so the preliminary Q1 figure represents roughly a fourfold increase, though part of that magnitude reflects a weak year‑ago base.
Gross margin improvement and AI impact
Super Micro now expects gross margin of 12–12.5% for the quarter, compared with its prior guidance of 10.4–10.8% — an improvement the company quantifies as about 1.65 percentage points. Management attributes the margin uplift to a more favorable customer and product mix consistent with increased AI infrastructure orders.
As a supplier to data center investments that manufactures servers and integrated computing systems, Super Micro’s sales are directly affected by spending on AI infrastructure.
Order backlog and annual outlook
CEO Charles Liang said in August that the company had secured more than $60 billion of new orders in the previous fiscal year and entered the current year with a record backlog. Earlier guidance for fiscal 2027 projected $65–72 billion of revenue, up from $39.1 billion the prior year.
The company’s Tuesday preliminary release did not include a revised full‑year forecast. Whether management raises the annual target based on the stronger first quarter will likely be clarified in the full quarterly report scheduled for November 3.
Market reaction and investor focus
Following the preliminary figures, Super Micro’s stock jumped 15.6% in after‑hours trading; peers’ shares also strengthened. Investors are, however, focused on the durability of the revenue surge and on how much of the expanding top line converts into profit and cash for the company.
Next steps
The complete quarterly results will be published on November 3, when details about profitability, cash flow and any change to the annual guidance are expected to become public.
