MGX, an Abu Dhabi-based investment vehicle, has raised roughly $50 billion to fund artificial intelligence (AI) investments, making it one of the largest funds globally focused on the technology. Bloomberg reported that the capital came from regional sovereign wealth funds and international investors.
What this signifies for Abu Dhabi
The size of the fund and the participation of multiple international partners signal Abu Dhabi’s intent to use AI as a lever to diversify its economy. The scale of the commitment and foreign involvement also reinforces Abu Dhabi’s credibility as an investor on the global stage.
MGX background and recent investments
MGX was launched in 2024 and is chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, the United Arab Emirates’ national security adviser. The fund was initially backed by two other Abu Dhabi entities, Mubadala and G42. MGX has already taken part in funding rounds for major AI firms including OpenAI, xAI and Anthropic.
Implications
The substantial capital pool and participation in prominent AI financing rounds highlight Abu Dhabi’s active push to reduce reliance on energy exports by building a technology investment base. MGX’s role as a large AI investor may also strengthen the region’s strategic position in AI development and deployment.
