S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that Alphabet Inc. Class A shares will be added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average at the start of trading next Monday, with Verizon being removed from the index. The change increases the weight of technology firms within the 30-stock benchmark.
Alphabet will join other major technology companies in the index such as Nvidia, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft. According to the index provider, Alphabet better reflects key growth areas of the U.S. economy — notably artificial intelligence (AI), cloud services and the digital advertising market.
In recent years Alphabet has invested heavily in AI development and related infrastructure; the company aims to show that these investments will pay off over the long term. After the announcement, Alphabet’s shares rose in after-hours trading, despite the stock having suffered its largest one-day drop in over a year on the preceding Monday. Year-to-date, Alphabet shares are still up by more than 10 percent, and the company could close a fourth consecutive positive year.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a 30-company, price-weighted index, meaning companies with higher share prices have a greater influence on the index’s movements. Verizon’s weight in the index was already small — reported at roughly 0.5 percent — which helped motivate the swap.
The decision also confirmed that Honeywell will remain a Dow Jones component after spinning off its aerospace business, while the newly independent Honeywell Aerospace will not be added to the index.
The change signals a shift in investor focus away from legacy telecommunications toward technology and AI-driven growth stories. Membership in the Dow carries notable prestige because the index aims to represent the most important companies in the U.S. economy; this replacement reflects that evolution in market leadership.
