On September 10, Amazon announced that advertisers can extend campaigns into ChatGPT through its demand-side platform (DSP), offered as a managed service. These ads appear beneath ChatGPT’s organic answers and are labeled “sponsored,” visible to users on both the free tier and the ChatGPT Go tier.
How the integration works
The Amazon DSP integration allows existing advertising campaigns to be extended onto the ChatGPT interface while being run as a managed offering. OpenAI continues to control ad delivery, meaning Amazon does not take over content decisions or the technical routing of responses within ChatGPT.
Under the announced arrangement, paid placements are displayed below the model’s organic answers and are explicitly marked so users can distinguish sponsored content from generated responses.
Background: ChatGPT ads and geographic rollout
ChatGPT’s ad format first launched in February. Since then, the ad business on the platform has grown to an annualized run-rate of roughly $1 billion and counts tens of thousands of advertisers. The placement has also expanded beyond the United States to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
Why this matters
Amazon’s move is significant because the company is one of the world’s largest advertising platforms. The Amazon advertising business is commonly described as the third-largest ad platform, with roughly $70 billion in scale. Its entry brings substantial new buyer demand to the ChatGPT environment, a factor that previously helped preserve a relative separation between model answers and paid placements simply because there were fewer ad buyers.
While Amazon’s presence does not legally or technically remove OpenAI’s control over what the model serves, the size and influence of Amazon’s advertising operation increase commercial pressure on the platform and could affect how the experience evolves for users and advertisers.
Conclusion
The DSP integration does not transfer content control away from OpenAI nor does it in itself abolish ChatGPT’s separation of answers and ads. Nevertheless, Amazon’s arrival introduces major new advertising demand, a development that could meaningfully shape ChatGPT’s business dynamics and user-facing behavior going forward.
