Anthropic has begun displaying Indian rupee prices for its Claude models on its website and mobile apps for some users in India. The move comes as India has become the company’s largest market outside the United States: Anthropic reports that India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the service’s second-largest market after the U.S.
Payment options and listed prices
Although prices are now shown in rupees, Anthropic has not enabled the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s widely used instant payments network. As a result, Indian users must still pay by card or via Apple’s and Google’s app store billing systems. This contrasts with OpenAI, which introduced Indian rupee pricing for ChatGPT in August and supported UPI payments.
Sample prices shown on Claude’s India website (local taxes included):
- Claude Pro: ₹2,000 per month when billed annually (about $21) — compared with $17/month in the U.S.
- Claude Max: starting at ₹11,999 per month (about $125) in India — compared with $100/month in the U.S.
- Team plans: start at ₹2,399 per seat per month (about $25) — compared with $20 in the U.S.
Prices in Claude’s mobile apps may differ slightly from those on the website.
India expansion and local presence
Anthropic has been strengthening its India presence: the company opened an office in Bengaluru in February after announcing the plan in October, and in January it appointed former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose to run its business in the country. Anthropic has also formed partnerships in recent months with Indian IT services firms Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to scale enterprise AI deployments.
Access restrictions earlier this year
The company’s expansion encountered a setback in June when Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-U.S. entities, prompting some Indian developers and startup founders to consider alternatives to American AI models. Access to Fable 5 has since been restored, while Mythos 5 remains limited.
Market context and comment
India is an increasingly important market for AI companies because of its large developer and tech workforce, but converting heavy usage into paid subscriptions remains difficult in the price-sensitive market.
Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment on the rollout of rupee pricing in India.
