Anthropic opens Milan office to support Italian companies, research and designers

On May 27, 2026, Anthropic announced it will open a new office in Milan — the company’s sixth in Europe, joining London, Dublin, Paris, Zurich and Munich. The Milan team will collaborate with Italian companies and the country’s developer community to build and scale applications using the Claude model responsibly, and to participate in Italy’s ongoing public and industry conversations about AI.

Connection to Italian public debate

The office opening follows the release of Pope Leo XIV’s first papal encyclical dedicated to artificial intelligence, Magnifica Humanitas. Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah was invited to speak at the encyclical’s presentation, where he discussed the ethical challenges posed by AI and urged that religious traditions, civil society, academia and governments all help shape a positive outcome for humanity.

Existing partnerships with Italian organisations

Anthropic says its frontier AI capabilities combined with a commitment to safety have already led to work with several major Italian organisations. Southern Europe operations are led by Thomas Remy, Anthropic’s Head of Southern Europe. Current Italian partners include:

  • Generali Group and Unipol Group (finance)
  • Angelini Pharma and Bracco Group (life sciences)
  • Enel Group (energy)
  • Pirelli (automotive)

Anthropic has also partnered with JAKALA, one of Europe’s leading data and AI companies, deploying Claude across more than 3,000 seats. Anthropic reports this deployment frees roughly 70% of senior team time for higher‑judgment client work.

Early adopters and reported impacts

Italian startups and technology companies have been early adopters of Claude. Satispay, a financial super app serving more than six million users, deployed Claude across its engineering teams; Anthropic reports this compressed an 18‑month roadmap into seven months and enabled the core payment system to be updated ten times faster than planned. At Bending Spoons, one of Italy’s largest technology firms, the majority of code changes are now co‑authored with Claude.

Design and creative collaborations

Anthropic is also engaging Italy’s leading designers. During Milan Design Week the team partnered with Alcova Milano to run a hands‑on workshop for creative professionals, showing how Claude can connect to tools used by industrial, furniture and spatial designers and contribute to their creative workflows.

Goals and message

Chris Ciauri, Anthropic MD International, said: “We are here to support Italian enterprise, Italian research, and Italian culture through a safe AI transition. Italy is a country that has always embraced profound transformation and we are optimistic about what frontier AI can do for this country, from its largest industrial groups to its founders, its universities, and its cultural institutions.”

Anthropic’s statement emphasizes that questions about how AI reshapes work, design, knowledge and human agency should not be answered by the technology sector alone. The company was founded on the belief that these are among the most important questions of our time, and that a successful AI transition requires more voices — from industry, civil society and institutions that have long considered human dignity. The Milan team will support Italian companies, researchers and builders using the technology and, where possible, contribute to the broader public and professional debate about how AI should be developed.
