Anthropic has confirmed to TechCrunch that it operates a wet biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area where it can apply its AI models to help design and run physical experiments. According to the company, the facility functions similarly to most biotech labs: Anthropic conducts some in-house research there while also collaborating with external partners.
Focus on fundamental biology, not drug development
Anthropic declined to disclose specific projects underway in the wet lab, but said the main emphasis is on fundamental biology rather than direct drug discovery. The company has signaled it does not want to appear to be competing directly with the pharmaceutical industry, where it counts several major customers and partners — most recently announcing a collaboration with Novo Nordisk on joint drug discovery.
Background: acquisition and new programs
In April, Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio, a previously stealth AI–biotech company. This week Anthropic launched a Life Sciences Verification Program intended to give vetted bio-researchers access to its most powerful models. The company has also published reports detailing some of its work relevant to drug discovery, including a report on accelerating protein design and another on enhancing biomolecular modeling.
The broader debate on risks and regulation
The wet lab announcement arrives amid an intense industry debate over AI’s risks and the call for slowed development and self-regulation. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently argued that AI could potentially cure most major diseases within 5–10 years, yet the company has also been the site of alarming internal commentary. Researcher Jacob Coxon resigned and warned that “the people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” Anthropic’s alignment lead gave odds of greater than 10% that AI could exterminate humanity within the next decade.
Amodei has urged the industry to slow down and consider self-regulation, and he has repeatedly identified bioterrorism as one of AI’s major risks.
Reactions
The juxtaposition of an AI company running a wet lab with these existential warnings has drawn attention. Investor and AI startup founder Chamath Palihapitiya posted on X: “The group behind such hits as: ‘We’re All Going To Die’ and ‘Regulate Me Now’ are building a wet lab in SF. I do not recommend this.”
Why this matters
Anthropic’s wet lab indicates that some AI developers are moving beyond in silico modeling toward integrating real-world biological experimentation with AI tools. That integration could accelerate scientific discovery, but it also raises ethical, safety and regulatory questions — particularly given public and internal concerns about the potential harms of advanced AI. Anthropic maintains the facility’s primary mission is fundamental biological research and says it seeks to respect relationships with existing customers and partners.
