Anthropic temporarily blocked access to its newly released Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 models after the US Commerce Department ordered export restrictions following identified security issues and an alleged Chinese "knowledge distillation" campaign.

Anthropic restores access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export restrictions lifted

Anthropic unveiled the Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 models on June 9; the company presented Fable as its most powerful generally available model to date, while Mythos was also announced in a limited fashion. An early version of Mythos was already distributed in April to roughly 50 selected, trusted partners — including Amazon, Google and Microsoft — under the Project Glasswing program for cybersecurity testing.

Just three days after the public debut, the US Commerce Department issued export restrictions that required Anthropic to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for foreign nationals. To comply with the directive, Anthropic ultimately made both models unavailable to all users.

The Commerce Department cited identified exploitation techniques that had altered Fable 5's protective layers. Authorities later reported an alleged Chinese "knowledge distillation" campaign: the tactic reportedly involves training a simpler, lower-capacity model using outputs from a far more advanced model like Mythos, which can accelerate a third party's development timeline.

On July 1 the US Commerce Department lifted the export controls on Fable 5 and Mythos 5; Howard Lutnick, named in the report as commerce minister, confirmed the decision in a letter while reserving the department's right to reassess. Anthropic began restoring access the following day.

In return, Anthropic agreed to proactively detect and mitigate security risks tied to the models and deployed a new defensive measure specifically designed to block the exploitation technique identified by the government.

Search trends and Claude's standing

Domestic Google search data show different interest patterns for the two model names: searches for "Fable" spiked most strongly around the days when the suspension was announced in late June, whereas "Mythos" showed smaller fluctuations in April during its limited reveal.

Regionally within Hungary, interest in "Fable" was strongest in Tolna and Csongrád counties, while "Mythos" attracted more queries in Nógrád, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Somogy counties. The broader "Claude" query was most concentrated in Budapest, followed by Csongrád and Pest.

On global measures, searches for ChatGPT remained substantially higher than for Claude. Nonetheless, Claude-related search interest has risen steadily since early 2026, suggesting the recent suspension occurred amid an already growing phase for the brand.
