Anthropic announced on Twitter that, effective July 20, Claude Fable 5 will be included in all Max and Team Premium plans. The company said the model will be available in those tiers at 50% of normal limits.
Pro and Team Standard users will retain access to Fable via usage credits, and Anthropic will provide those users a one-time $100 credit.
Why the reversal?
The company’s change of plan follows competitive pressure from other large models, specifically GPT-5.6 Sol and — to a lesser extent — Kimi 3. Anthropic had previously planned to remove Fable 5 from subscription accounts and make it available only through API pricing; that approach was driven by concerns about compute capacity.
Observers noted that charging $100 or $200 per month for subscription tiers that did not include Anthropic’s leading model would have been unpopular with many customers. The announced reversal appears to respond both to market competition and to user expectations about what should be included in subscription packages.
Outstanding issues and implications
Anthropic cited compute capacity as a reason for the original plan. Some commentators have speculated that Anthropic may need to scale back some training work to free up GPUs for serving the model, though Anthropic has not provided details on any such steps.
The decision removes the uncertainty some users called the “Fablepocalypse,” when access to Fable 5 from subscriptions seemed likely to be withdrawn. Going forward, Max and Team Premium subscribers will have built-in access at reduced limits, while Pro and Team Standard customers can use credits to access the model and will receive the one-time $100 credit.
Summary
From July 20, 2026, Claude Fable 5 will be part of Anthropic’s Max and Team Premium plans at 50% limits; Pro and Team Standard users can access Fable with usage credits and will get a one-off $100 credit. The reversal was influenced by competition from models such as GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi 3 and reflects ongoing trade-offs around compute capacity and customer expectations.
