Anthropic has reached an agreement with SpaceX under which the artificial intelligence developer will make full use of the computing capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center near Memphis. According to the company statement, Anthropic will have access to more than 300 megawatts of data-center infrastructure.
Details of the arrangement
The deal immediately increases the compute resources available to Anthropic’s paid services, including Claude Pro and Claude Max. Anthropic also said it is interested in jointly developing a space-deployed, multi-gigawatt computing infrastructure with SpaceX.
Context: rivalry and local controversy
The partnership has drawn attention because Elon Musk has publicly criticized Anthropic on multiple occasions, and his AI company xAI operates as a direct competitor. xAI built data-center infrastructure in the Memphis area, with its largest facility named Colossus 1. To power operations, xAI and affiliated units installed natural-gas-fired turbines.
xAI has argued those generators were temporary and therefore did not require federal permitting. Reports say the turbines substantially worsened air quality in Memphis and sparked sustained protests from local residents.
Tension with the U.S. Department of Defense
Relations between Anthropic and the U.S. government have been strained. In March, the Pentagon designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk and excluded the company from partnerships with the U.S. military after disagreements over the terms of model usage. To reverse that decision, Anthropic filed lawsuits against the Trump administration in San Francisco and Washington; those legal actions are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Department of Defense has been favoring xAI’s Grok model and solutions from other developers.
Funding and background
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by researchers and leaders who left OpenAI. The company is currently in discussions with investors on a new funding round; Anthropic has indicated its valuation in that round could reach $900 billion.
