Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, is having a high-profile weekend: he was lampooned on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live and is scheduled to have dinner at the White House with President Donald Trump. Axios first reported Amodei’s dinner plans; TechCrunch later confirmed them with a source familiar with his schedule.
First one-on-one meeting
The dinner will be the first in-person, one-on-one meeting between the two men. Their interaction comes amid a public dispute over AI safety: Amodei published a plan urging a slowdown or at least more cautious progress in AI development, while Trump has dismissed the AI backlash as, without presenting evidence, a Democratic hoax and has suggested rebranding the technology as “super intelligence.”
Government relations and legal conflict
Beyond the public exchange, Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration has already been strained. Earlier this year the Pentagon designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk in response to the company’s efforts to put guardrails around the use of its technology. Anthropic is challenging that designation in court. At the same time, some other administration officials have taken a friendlier tone toward the company.

The dinner matters because it creates a direct channel for discussion between two actors with divergent views on AI development and regulation.
