Mark Gurman of Bloomberg previously wrote that testing for the device had reached late-stage trials. However, new chatter indicates the project may have been put on hold.
The pause was reported in a short post on X by leaker Kosutami. The post states that Apple has suspended development of the AirPods Ultra, though it does not provide detailed reasons for the halt.
According to more recent rumors, the AirPods Ultra might not arrive in 2026 as once speculated but could debut in 2027 instead. If development is only temporarily suspended and later resumed, the delay may not materially affect that later launch window.
GSMArena has pointed out that the earbuds are expected to include not only a camera but also on-device artificial intelligence features — for example, enhanced Siri capabilities. This raises the possibility that AI-related technical or productization challenges contributed to the stoppage. Apple has faced notable difficulties in developing artificial intelligence features and operating AI-driven services in recent years, which could be relevant to the current situation.
