Most Americans Do Not Rely on AI for News, Gallup Poll Finds

A May Gallup poll finds that most U.S. adults are not turning to artificial intelligence (AI) tools for news and information. Only 7% of respondents said they rely on AI “a great deal” or “a fair amount” for news, while 57% reported that they do not use the technology for news at all.

The low level of AI usage cuts across age groups, according to the survey, although adults under 50 indicated they are slightly more likely to use AI in their news consumption than older adults.

News sources and trust

When asked to rank their regular news sources, Americans were least likely to name AI chatbots and assistants as a top choice. Social media emerged as the most commonly cited source for news.

The poll also highlights a potential trust problem as media outlets increasingly adopt AI: a plurality of 39% said they would lose trust in information if they knew AI had been used to produce it. That constituency represents the largest single group signaling diminished confidence tied to AI use in content creation.

Why this matters

As news organizations and media companies incorporate AI tools into their workflows more frequently, public acceptance and perceived credibility will be important factors. The Gallup data indicate that, at present, the majority do not view AI as a primary source for news and a significant share would distrust content knowing AI was involved in its production.
